research
Very recently I have been attempting to outreach
professional employment and finally a business venture I may feel comfortable
presented itself in the form of International Business Machines, more commonly
known to people as (IBM). It is my goal to gain an understanding of the
business structure no matter the complexity it may entail, and to fuel an
interest which will lead me to further pursue possible employment. After
lengthy research both in the form of investigating and consulting the following
points were of the most relevance.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Thomas
Connor, a Hiring Manager about the possible position, some positives coming
from our conversation is that although headquartered in New York this job calls
for traveling only to Austin Texas. Further interest on the part of the company
would allow me to work full-time as a hardware developer, which would give me a
chance to work in development teams on quality control projects towards
advancement in our company.
After consideration on my part I felt the next step
would be to be to gain a stronger understanding of the company which I had
indeed heard about however never truly grasped the structured company’s way of
doing business.
A. International
Business Machines (IBM) is an American multinational technology and consulting
firm headquartered in Armonk, New York. IBM manufactures and sells computer
hardware and software, and it offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting
services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. As of
September 2011, IBM is the second-largest publicly traded technology company in
the world by market capitalization.
B. IBM
holds more patents than any other U.S.-based technology company and has nine
research laboratories worldwide, one being in Austin Texas. Its employees have
garnered five Nobel Prizes, four Turing Awards, nine National Medals of
Technology, and five National Medals of Science. Famous inventions by IBM include
the automated teller machine (ATM), the floppy disk, the hard disk drive, the
magnetic stripe card, the relational database, the Universal Product, the
financial swap, SABRE airline reservation system, DRAM, and Watson artificial
intelligence.
In closing my eventful talk and lengthy research
conducted I felt that IBM is the ideal company to fit the direction and path I
am pursuing. As an Industrial Engineer a position in a hub center such as
Austin, opportunity in quality control, and chance to work in a design team
with eventual leadership role is everything I am looking for at the present
time.
